How Perfumes are made
Perfumes are composed of a mixture of different aromas that usually come to from essential oils. Perfume formulations can be expressed in volumetric proportions and weight of each of its components. Perfume today are manufactured and used in different ways than in previous centuries. The ingredients more frequently with products chemical synthesis rather than natural oils. Many natural and artificial materials have been used to make perfume to apply to the skin and clothing, to put in cleaners and cosmetics, or perfume the air. For people who want to make perfumes at home, measures weight is a problem, because the average kitchen scale is not required accuracy. Their use will help to unpredictable results and not reproducible. In fact, only 2,000 of the 250,000 known species of flowering plants contain these essential oils. Therefore, chemical synthesis should be used to recreate the smell of non-fat substances. Some fragrances are products of animal origin. Typical plant products include anise, bay leaf, bergamot, cardamom, cedarwood, eucalyptus, frankincense, gardenia, geranium, iris, jasmine, lavender, lemon, lilac, lily, lily of the valley, magnolia, moss, neroli, orange, iris, patchouli, pine, raspberry, rose, sage, sandalwood, tuberose, vanilla, violet and ylang-ylang.

The Very First Usages of Pleasant Aromas In Ceremonies
Incredibly, the word “perfume” comes from the Latin words (per fumum), which translate directly to “through smoke”. Surprised? The reason for this is that the very first usages of fragrances by civilized peoples was in religious ceremonies, when substances such as aromatic herbs, myrrh and different aromatic gums and tree saps were burned to create pleasant aromas.
The Romans Worked To Refine the First Crude Perfumes
So how did we get from there to modern Gucci perfume? It's the ancient Egyptians who are credited with taking the step from herbs and raw organic substances burning in a tray to something, “most likely an aromatic paste or salve” that was applied to the body. Roman seafaring traders then took these aromatic substances back to Rome where they were further refined.
More Advanced Extraction and Distilation Methods are Developed
Ancient Egyptians were the first to melt sand into glass and shape it into containers, so it's assumed that Roman traders again took small glass vessels back home to keep what was the early beginnings of liquid perfumes in. Then as time moved on, people began experimenting with different extraction and distillation methods, as well as methods for containing extractions and distillates in substances such as alcohol.
Napoleons Influence On French Perfumes
When Napoleon Bonaparte ruled France, one of the notable things that he did was established government agencies for the sole purpose of improving and refining French culture. Financing was provided for research and development projects involving things like foods, textiles and yes, perfumes. So as the French army and business interests moved around the globe during that time, they sent back new types of fabrics, vegetables and aromatic substances to these government entities to be tested, catologed and released for the public good.
Americans, Canadians and Brits Discover French Perfumes
So even though things in the end didn't work out so well for Napoleon, the French to this day still enjoy the benefits of his legacy in the form of couture, cuisine and perfume. Then it was World War 2 that had American, Canadian and British men and women returning home from service in France, having realized that there were better smelling perfumes and colognes to be had, thus increasing demand.
Gucci Perfume Today Continues To Turn Heads
Gucci perfume has been produced and available in several types for several decades now, but it wasn't until the early 1980s, after a period of company reorganization that the sales of Gucci perfume began take off. Then the House of Gucci went through yet another period of reorganization in the year 2000, when the reigns were handed over to a man by thye name of Tom Ford. Today Gucci features a complete line of superior perfumes and colognes, with names like Rush, Envy and Gucci Pout Homme just to name a few of them.
No Way, No How, No Perfume Review: Election Day Miscellanea

I find myself unable to write about perfume today. Today is serious, guys. Go vote. Go obsessively watch the news. Before you do though, tell us what you will be wearing on this historic day. My perfume is a change from my usual tastes, a breath of fresh air, Puredistance. And I could not resist wearing Madame President by Sephora by OPI on my tips (in fact, I bought it just for this occasion, yes, I am a nerd). I want to note, however, that I am wearing it for its name, not for its color. My nails might be red but I am all about blue today.
To mark the occasion, let's have a prize draw. In a half-hearted effort to appear non-partisan, I am giving away a perfume that has neither blue nor red in its name- a 1/2oz bottle of Tom Ford' White Patchouli. If you would like to be the draw, say so in your comment.

My signature perfume? KL by Karl Lagerfeld. I started wearing this scent about 20 years ago, and never tire of its spicy scent of bergamot, ylang-ylang, and amber. Lagerfeld stopped selling this perfume in the US in the 90's, and before internet shopping, I had to have friends bring it back to me from Europe or the Carribean.
